DOG TRAINING TIPS & ARTICLES
Nail clipping is an event hated by many dogs and avoided by most owners.
The trick is to do it little and often so that the quick, the sensitive part
which bleeds when cut, will recede back from the nail edge.
The reason most dogs, particularly house pets, suffer with this is that
their nails don't get trimmed often enough. Their nails are allowed to grow
long, and they don't get enough outdoor exercise on hard surfaces to keep them
naturally worn down.
Start playing with your puppy's feet and nails early so he gets
accustomed to having them touched.
Overgrown nails can become very painful, pushing the dog's toes apart
and making him reluctant to put his full weight straight down on his paw. His
legs may bow out rather than stand straight and he may walk with a limp.
Nail clippers come in different sizes so make sure you get the correct
one for your dog. Clip in small increments to within an eighth of an inch of
the quick. You'll be able to see it in dogs with light nails. If the quick is
all the way down the nail, file the nails daily for a couple of weeks to get
the quick to recede and then keep them trimmed regularly.
You should have a styptic pencil or Kwik Stop® powder on hand to stem
the bleeding should you clip the quick by mistake. Cornstarch will also work.
Clot-It Plus(TM) is a styptic powder with benzocaine to staunch bleeding and
temporarily relieve the pain of clipped nails and minor cuts.
