DOG SUPPLIES
Comfortable Bedding For Your New Pup
Your new puppy or dog will be happy to discover there’s a warm, soft
sleeping space waiting for her in her new home. Once you choose the type
of bed she will be sleeping in, you must choose a place in the house where
it will be free from drafts, unobtrusive, and out of high-traffic areas.
The pup should be able to rest and sleep without loud disturbances or
frequent distractions. Like you, she’ll appreciate some peace and quiet
for sleeping.
The most popular commercially made beds are made of
wicker. However, dirt and crumbs can get easily lodged in wicker, making
it harder to keep clean. Wicker can also become a favorite target for
teething and destructive puppies, so it may be advisable to wait until
your dog has passed the non-stop chewing stage before trying a wicker bed.
There are plenty of other options to choose from.
Many dogs enjoy
the cozy privacy of a crate… it quickly gives a new dog a sense of
security... a home all his very own inside the house. Standard crates
suitable for dogs that won’t exceed thirty pounds are about two by four
feet and stand three feet high. Larger enclosures are available to fit
bigger breeds.

When The Puppy First Comes Home
... place her in her crate or cage and leave her alone there. After ten
or fifteen minutes, return and release her. While the pup is in the cage, do
your best to resist her mournful howls, which should subside after a few
minutes. Try to ease her fear by placing a light blanket over the cage to
transform it into a cozy enclosure. Of course, the puppy's world should in no
way be confined to the cage. Supervised ventures throughout the house are
crucial to her becoming fully acclimated to her new environment.
Initially, she will be missing the snug camaraderie of sleeping with her
mother and litter-mates. A good substitute which will help her settle in is a
lukewarm hot water bottle wrapped in a towel and placed in her bed.
Puppies need gentle discipline to give them a sense of order. When it
comes to bedtime, they need to learn early that sleep usually means
temporarily leaving the fun and attention people provide. A puppy should be
confined to her "room" when her natural sleeping time occurs. Establish a
schedule and stick to it, so it becomes second nature. A good way to ease the
trauma of these nightly separations is to place a piece of your clothing in
the puppy's bed. The scent that emanates from the garment will be calming.
